Ron Washington and his Texas Rangers opened the 2013 season with an 8-2 loss against new rivals the Houston Astros. The Rangers brought in Derek Lowe to relieve lefty Matt Harrisson but the move backfired as Lowe gave a up a 3-run pinch home run to Rick Ankiel.
“You have to tip your hat. (The Astros) played good baseball over there,” Washington said after the game. “That’s all you can say. They pitched. They hit. They did everything. We were fired up, too, but you have to give (Houston RHP) Norris credit. He did a good job.”
The Rangers close out the series against the Astros on Wednesday then face their former AL MVP Josh Hamilton and the Los Angeles Angels.
